Doodle Designs and Owen Wall Ceramics
A community engagement project with local primary schools.
Doodle and Owen Wall Ceramics have collaborated as part of their Festival of Industry project to work with local young people to create new work which explores and incorporates local industrial processes of brick making and provides an opportunity for learning new creative skills. As a nod towards the ceramic industry of brickmaking in Enfield the young people learned about how wax acts as a resist when used with glazes and used the technique to design and produce their own ceramic tiles.
Doodle founder Christina Kalinowski ran workshops at Churchfield Primary School, Woodpecker Hall Academy, Alyward Academy, Alan Pullinger Youth Centre, Exodus Youth Hub and Millfield Theatre. During these workshops Christina taught 356 children who all designed and made their own unique tile, plus 20 teachers, making 440 tiles in total. Christina also gave presentation in the schools and centres with information about the brickmaking industry of Enfield and about Enfield’s industrial history.
Edmonton based ceramicist Owen Wall collaborated on the project and will be making and glazing over 250 tiles using a wax resist technique, using these handmade and uniquely designed tiles to cover a historical WWII tank blocker located in Angel Gardens.
