Dan Maier - Southgate Library
For the Festival of Industry, Extraordinary Design founder Dan Maier transformed Southgate library with a stained-glass effect artwork. Responding to the community’s desire for a greener Southgate and her own love of plants, she took inspiration from Cuthbert’s Seeds, one of the UK’s best known horticultural firms, which was founded in Southgate. Cuthbert’s Nursery spanned the land from the Library and Sorting Office to the underground station and was based there for 130 years until London Transport bought the land to build the iconic Southgate station in 1933. They were the largest horticultural supplier to Woolworths for over 60 years.
The design was developed in collaboration with local residents as Dan held a consultation session at the library in January to discuss design ideas and concepts with attendees, which informed the direction of the final piece.
