Museum of Enfield exhibition
Exhibition exploring the past, present and future of Enfield’s industries.
This exhibition was displayed at the Dugdale Arts Centre and 4 library sites from July 2023 to March 2024.
To say that Enfield was once an industrial hub is an understatement – the borough has played host to a wide range of industries, each one at the forefront of production and technique. It contained the largest area of market gardening in the UK, saw mass production of small arms after the Napoleonic War, and was the epicentre of electrical engineering and invention that sparked the technological industrial revolution.
Names such as the Royal Small Arms Factory (now known as the Small Arms Factory), Belling, Ediswan, Thorn EMI, Spears, Fergusons and Wrights Flour Mill – known the world over – are just a fraction of Enfield’s industrial roster.
This exhibition, combined with an outdoor touring exhibition and displays in Palmers Green, Edmonton Green and Ordnance Unity Libraries, explored just some of the industries that have and currently do call Enfield home.
