Clang Studios
A community engagement project with Clang Studios and pupils from Kingsmead School.
Listen to the soundscape co-created by Clang Studios, Tope Olufemi and pupils at Kingsmead School.
Clang Studios took a group of twelve 15-16 year old students from Kingsmead School to the local industrial estate with some field recorders and encouraged them to explore and record the sounds around them - as well as creating their own. Given it was a particularly rainy day, students used puddles and rainwater trapped inside objects - as well as their own voices, passing cars, and the general sound of industry to make different recordings. In our second session, we brought in some equipment for the students to run those sounds through, encouraging them to distort, chop and mangle the sounds - as well as attempt to use them more rhythmically. The resulting soundscape embodies the sometimes cacophonic, sometimes docile sound of Enfield's industry - alongside fleshing out the interesting ideas the students had begun in our sessions.’
Feedback from Sound Designer Tope Olufemi: "I really enjoyed putting together and delivering these sessions to the students - and giving them access to equipment which is often very gatekept/too expensive for schools to provide. It was very enriching in terms of bringing me closer to Enfield's community - but it also makes me aware of the fact that this type of project isn't prioritised very often - and the local community should be given more opportunity to engage creatively with one another, but also the space that they inhabit.'
